Why is employer support important?
Increasing numbers of people now live with a long-term health condition, with an estimated 15 million in England alone. This is equivalent to 28% of the population.
As of 2021, 8.8 million people out of the UK working-age population have a disability or chronic condition. Of these 8.8 million, more than 5 million people with long-term conditions - including asthma, diabetes and depression - were economically active, and therefore able to work. But there is still great scope to improve their working lives, and avoid a situation whereby employees with otherwise manageable long-term conditions leave work due to inadequate support.
As more employees are impacted by chronic conditions (with long Covid now a significant factor), combined with significant pressures on the NHS, there is more cause than ever before for employers to understand how to provide relevant support. Investing in the right tools can help empower individuals and managers to best accommodate such conditions, and keep employees in the workforce.
